IIT Bhilai was established in 2016 in Chhattisgarh. Its first BTech programme began in August 2016. The institute operated from a transit campus before moving academic and administrative operations to its permanent Kutelabhata campus on 7 August 2023, according to its 2024–25 annual report. The annual report describes 459.64 acres allotted across the institute's land parcels and a first-phase development focused on about 360 acres at Kutelabhata; the campus-area field therefore records the first-phase site rather than treating all allotted land as one contiguous campus.
