IELTS Syllabus and Skills

IELTS assesses four English-language skills.

Listening

The Listening test contains four parts and 40 questions. Question types include multiple choice, matching, plan/map/diagram labelling, form completion, note completion, table completion, flow-chart completion, summary completion, sentence completion and short-answer questions.

Reading

Reading contains 40 questions. Academic Reading uses texts appropriate to an academic environment, while General Training Reading uses texts relevant to everyday life, workplace and social contexts.

Writing

Writing contains two tasks. Academic Task 1 uses visual information such as graphs, tables, charts or diagrams. General Training Task 1 is a letter-writing task. Task 2 for both versions requires a longer response to a point of view, argument or problem.

Speaking

The Speaking test has three parts and is conducted with a trained IELTS examiner. It assesses spoken communication through an interview, an individual long turn and a discussion.
