Dairy Technology degree programme began in 1993 under Kerala Agricultural University; college status followed in 1998; the institute developed under KVASU after the university's formation in 2010.

The Verghese Kurien Institute of Dairy and Food Technology (VKIDFT) is part of Kerala Veterinary and Animal Sciences University's Faculty of Dairy Science and Technology at Mannuthy. The university records the start of the four-year dairy technology degree in 1993 under Kerala Agricultural University, its upgrade to college status in 1998, and its later development as VKIDFT after the creation of KVASU. The institute offers B.Tech. programmes in Dairy Technology and Food Technology, together with postgraduate M.Tech. and Ph.D. study. Its academic departments cover dairy technology and engineering, dairy microbiology and chemistry, dairy business management and husbandry, as well as food technology, food engineering, food quality assurance, food business management and food plant operations.
