Engineering education in BHU began in 1919 with the establishment of Banaras Engineering College (BENCO). College of Technology (TECHNO) and College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET) were established later. In 1968, BENCO, MINMET and TECHNO were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU). IT-BHU became the Indian Institute of Technology (BHU) Varanasi on 29 June 2012 by an Act of Parliament.

Engineering education at Banaras Hindu University began in 1919 with Banaras Engineering College (BENCO); College of Technology (TECHNO) and College of Mining & Metallurgy (MINMET) were subsequently established. In 1968, BENCO, MINMET and TECHNO were merged to form the Institute of Technology (IT-BHU). On 29 June 2012, IT-BHU became IIT (BHU) Varanasi through an Act of Parliament. The institute offers undergraduate, integrated dual-degree, postgraduate and doctoral study across engineering, science, pharmaceutical engineering, materials, biochemical and biomedical engineering, decision science and humanities.
