Scholarships for Engineering Students in India: Official Schemes and Checks

Bookmark

Engineering scholarships may be based on merit, financial need, gender, disability, community, region, institution or a combination of criteria. A scheme's name alone does not establish eligibility: the current guidelines control.

Where engineering students should search

1. National Scholarship Portal

Check the official NSP scheme directory for schemes that match your course, year, institution and personal eligibility. The directory includes AICTE schemes and other central schemes when open for the relevant academic year.

2. AICTE schemes

Students may wish to check the current guidelines for AICTE Pragati, Saksham and Swanath schemes. Eligibility differs by scheme and may distinguish degree and diploma programmes. Verify the current award amount, beneficiary conditions, eligible institutions and application dates on the official portal before relying on a summary.

3. State government and university awards

Check your state's scholarship portal, the engineering college's financial-aid office and any university fee-waiver policy. Some support is limited to domicile students, specific institutions or particular income/category groups.

4. Private and charitable awards

Companies and foundations sometimes offer education grants, but programmes can open, close or change eligibility. Use the provider's official website and current terms. Do not assume a company has an active scholarship merely because an old blog mentions it.

Eligibility checklist

  • Course and level: diploma, undergraduate degree or postgraduate study.
  • Institution: recognition, approval and whether the institution is on the scheme's eligible list.
  • Academic performance: marks, progression or renewal requirements.
  • Family income: threshold, certificate format and issue date.
  • Other conditions: gender, disability, domicile, category or special circumstances.
  • Combining awards: whether receiving another scholarship is permitted.

Documents to prepare

Commonly requested documents may include admission proof, previous marksheets, income or domicile certificate, bank details, identity proof and scheme-specific certificates. The exact list depends on the current application form.

Application process

  1. Read the full current guidelines before starting.
  2. Confirm the scheme is open for your academic year and student type.
  3. Register on the official portal and complete any required OTR or identity verification.
  4. Submit accurate information and legible documents.
  5. Save the application number and monitor verification status.
  6. Respond to any defect or correction request before its deadline.

Scholarship safety

Be cautious of sites that ask for a fee to β€œguarantee” a scholarship, request passwords or OTPs, or advertise fixed deadlines without linking the current official notice. Never share portal credentials with an agent.

Start with BodhDisha Scholarships, then verify the scheme on the relevant official provider portal.
